What is AAKG?
AAKG is an acronym for the compound arginine-alpha-ketoglutarate. AAKG is a natural substance that plays several essential roles in the body, including the creation of creatine, the formation of signalling molecules, and of most importance in sports nutrition, is an essential part of the nitric oxide cycle. AAKG is effectively a nitrate supplement. AAKG can increase energy levels and improve blood flow providing that great pump feeling.
What are nitrate supplements?
Nitrate is a naturally occurring organic compound of nitrogen and oxygen which has the chemical formula NO3- . Nitrate occurs naturally in many natural foods we eat, especially leafy greens like spinach, silverbeet and even bok choy. Nitrate supplements work through various pathways to increase nitric oxide levels in our blood. Nitric oxide relaxes and opens our blood vessels, promoting blood flow and nutrient delivery to our muscles.
How does AAKG work?
AAKG is taken as a powdered supplement. Within our bodies, AAKG is converted into L-citrulline. As part of this process, nitric oxide is produced as a byproduct, and nitric oxide has many positive impacts on sports performance.
AAKG what does it do?
When being converted to L-citrulline in our bodies, nitric oxide is produced as a byproduct. Nitric oxide opens and dilates our blood vessels and this allows more blood to be pumped to the muscles. This increased blood flow carries more oxygen and nutrients to the muscles allowing you to work harder for longer. AAKG is often included as an ingredient in pre-workout supplements due to the gym pump it promotes.

As a nitrate supplement, AAKG has the following benefits:
- Increased endurance – the delivery of more oxygen and nutrients to muscles increases exercise capacity. For endurance athletes this means being able to run longer or faster. In the gym this means being able to pump out more reps or use heavier weights.
- Reduced muscle fatigue – the delivery of more blood to muscles means that more fuel generating and muscle building nutrients, and compounds are delivered to muscles and this means that muscles fatigue slower and recover faster.
- Bigger pumps – the opening of blood vessels, promotes blood flow and maximises pumps in the gym.
Should I take AAKG in my pre-workout?
What does AAKG taste like?
AAKG is a natural unflavoured powder, and it has a slightly bitter taste.
What should I mix AAKG with?
As pure AAKG unflavoured, it can be mixed with any other VPA® products. You can add AAKG to water, juice, or electrolyte drinks - pretty much anything you want. Be aware you may still be able to taste it in these fluids. Many people add AAKG to their pre-workout before training, or to electrolytes during training for etc. The amount of liquid you add your AAKG to is up to you, but we do provide the guideline of 200ml.
AAKG dosage
The optimal dose of AAKG is 3-6g. One 200g tub of AAKG has 66 3g serves. One serve is about ½ a teaspoon, but for accuracy we recommend weighing a serve of AAKG using microscales.
When to take AAKG powder
AAKG is best taken about 20 minutes before training to give it time to enter the nitric oxide cycle and start working. To maintain high AAKG levels for the entire day, you can take AAKG up to three times a day to a maximum dose of 15-18g.
Amino acid clumping and how to store AAKG
The natural properties of amino acids means that they tend to take on moisture. This is why silicon moisture sachets are added during the packing process. Once your AAKG is opened it will start to take on moisture and should be stored in a cool dark location to keep it as moisture free as possible. We recommend using it within 60 days once it is opened. If your AAKG starts to clump, rest assured that although it may be more difficult to scoop but it will still work just as well.
Can I get samples of AAKG?

Can I take AAKG and protein at the same time?
Yes, you can. You can mix them together in the same shake or take separately but at the same time if you choose.

Taking the recommended dose of AAKG should not have any side effects. If too much AAKG is taken in one sitting diarrhea and gastric discomfort may be experienced.
