What is Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)?

Whey protein concentrate is a byproduct of cheese manufacturing, and it is the liquid that is left over after the milk has been processed. WPC protein percentage is approximately 80% protein, with minimal, but slightly higher levels of carbohydrates and fats than the other whey protein, whey protein isolate (WPI).

Whey protein concentrate also has more lactose and a full amino acid profile, making it one of the best protein sources on the planet.

WPC protein has different uses depending on your fitness goals. Here’s how it can support your fitness journey:

Ideal for Weight Loss

With its high protein content, low fat, and minimal carbohydrates, whey protein concentrate is an excellent choice for those following a low-carb diet. It helps reduce calorie intake, enabling you to use your fat stores as the primary energy source. WPC protein powder is also effective in supporting weight loss efforts by curbing hunger. It creates a feeling of fullness for longer due to its slow digestion rate. That’s why VPA protein is regarded as the best Australian-made protein powder to help you meet your weight loss goals.

Ideal for Muscle Gain

Whey Protein Concentrate, rich in BCAAs and boasting a complete amino acid profile, is highly effective for muscle repair and growth following strenuous exercise. WPC protein stands out as one of the most bioavailable protein sources, ensuring that your body absorbs most of the protein from your shake. This absorption efficiency makes a high-quality WPC protein shake after training excellent for promoting muscle growth. Additionally, incorporating WPC protein powder into your daily diet helps you meet your protein needs more easily and affordably, supporting consistent muscle development. For these reasons, VPA’s Australian-made protein powder is the perfect choice for boosting muscle growth, helping you effortlessly meet your daily protein requirements and build strength.

Great for Sports Performance

With all sports, there is a level of muscle breakdown that occurs, but this is particularly true for resistance sports such as weight lifting, contact sports and martial arts. For this reason, it is essential to fuel your body after training with high-quality protein to allow your body to start the repair and growth process faster, to get you back to peak performance quickly, stronger and faster than you were yesterday. This is why Whey Protein Concentrate is so important for athletes, as WPC triggers your body’s repair process quickly and more effectively than most other protein sources.

What Makes RPG Energy Gels Different

Most running gels give you one thing: carbs or electrolytes, or amino acids. RPG combines all three because we know that's what is actually required during hard efforts. We tested these energy gels with real athletes on actual runs and races - not just in a lab.

It comes in three flavours, so you're not forced into something you hate mid-race. An electrolyte gel that’s easy on your stomach. BCAAs for recovery. Clean sachet design that keeps trails litter-free.

Plus, we make every batch in our facility here in Australia. We test them independently. We back them with our guarantee. That's what separates RPG energy gels from the rest - we don't compromise, and neither should you.

FAQ

What's better, WPC protein or WPI?

When it comes to WPC protein vs WPI, both offer high-quality protein. Liquid whey is collected as a by-product of cheese manufacturing and depending on the processing steps, whey protein concentrate or whey protein isolate are produced. Why concentrate powder consists of up to 80% protein, and the rest is carbohydrates and fats. Whey protein isolate powder, on the other hand, contains 90% or more protein.

In our case, VPA WPI consists of approximately 90% protein, with almost no carbs and fats. It’s also 99% lactose-free, making it a great option for lactose-intolerant people as opposed to WPC. However, WPC protein powder is a more economical option. So when it comes to WPC protein vs WPI, you should opt for WPC if you’re looking to achieve almost similar results in a more affordable way. Therefore, VPA protein is the best Australian-made protein powder out there.

When should I take WPC?

Although WPC protein can technically be consumed at any time, it is best taken directly after training to aid in your recovery, and through the day as a snack or when you need to supply your body with additional protein, such as the day after a big workout. We do not recommend consuming WPC protein powder directly before any exercise, as it may make your stomach upset, please consume at least 45 before exercising to allow the WPC to digest.

What makes VPA WPC better than other plant-based protein powders?

  • We’re Australian-owned and operated, and only use the highest quality WPC protein.

  • We’re lab-tested by an independent company to ensure our protein powders and ingredient profiles are as good as we promise them to be. We are one of the very few supplement companies that do this and publish our results on our website (see ‘Lab Testing’ tab on this page).

  • With reputable high-level athletes and ambassadors on our VPA® team who use our WPC daily, you can rest easy knowing you have the best quality whey protein powder the Australian market can offer.

  • We’ve designed our supply chain to include Australian products and ingredients, and our warehouse structure to sustainably get our products to you quickly with a reduced carbon footprint.

  • Best flavour guarantee – we believe protein powder should have the best BCAA profile possible and taste amazing at the same time. So, if you don’t love it, just return it.

  • 100% Flavour Happiness Guarantee– we believe protein powder should be enjoyed and not endured, that’s why we have spent so much time and energy to ensure our flavours are the best in the industry. Love it or return it.

Does the “Flavour Happiness Guarantee” apply to VPA WPC?

Yes, our WPC protein powder is one of our most popular products with some of our customer's favourite flavours, making VPA a top Australian-made protein powder company.

Can anyone use VPA WPC?

Yes, VPA® WPC is safe for anyone to consume. In fact, most baby formulas use WPC protein as their main ingredient.

However, if you have dairy/lactose intolerance we recommend you use our WPI (99% lactose-free) or our Premium Plant. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please ask a medical professional such as a GP or dietitian before using WPC protein powder.

What is the protein content of WPC?

VPA Premium Whey protein concentrate has 24 grams of protein per serving size of 30 grams of WPC protein powder. Our whey protein 1 kg packs have 33 servings.

How is Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) manufactured?

The process of obtaining WPC protein begins with the removal of water from pasteurised skim milk. As previously explained, milk contains two major proteins: casein and whey. Casein, the primary protein, makes up about 80% of the total protein content, while whey accounts for around 20%. Below is a summary of the typical method for manufacturing WPC powder. First, the milk is pasteurised for a short time and then held overnight. Next, the mixture undergoes the cheese-making process, producing curds and liquid whey. The liquid whey is drained through a stainless steel screen, and the remaining curd is cut. The whey liquid is then filtered, reducing it to one-fifth of its original volume, resulting in a whey concentrate that is approximately 80% protein. The final WPC protein is spray-dried to produce whey protein powder. VPA Australia WPC is processed using proprietary ultra-filtration techniques, resulting in undenatured, high-quality soluble whey proteins.

What are the benefits of using Whey Protein Concentrate?

Reduce muscle loss and enhance recovery: - Years of research have shown that supplementing with milk proteins, particularly whey proteins, can reduce muscle loss due to their high L-leucine content Additionally, the high L-glutamine content helps restore energy efficiently after intense workouts, improving recovery.

Increase strength and muscle growth Studies show that men doing resistance training saw greater strength gains when supplementing with whey protein compared to training alone. This is mainly due to the high Branched Chain Amino Acid (BCAA) content in whey protein. The quality of a protein for enhancing muscle mass and strength is closely related to its leucine content. 4

Enhance protein synthesis - Whey proteins can contain up to 26% BCAA, which are efficient substances for synthesising new proteins. Leucine acts as a signalling molecule for the initiation of protein synthesis.

Increase bioavailability of essential amino acids - Research found that the amino acid profile in individuals’ dietary proteins influences their nitrogen utilisation. This means poor quality dietary protein intake has been shown to increase nitrogen losses and limit protein synthesis, therefore ingestion of whey proteins containing high essential amino acids can reduce nitrogen losses

Does VPA Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) contain any fillers?

We pride ourselves at VPA Australia for only selling 100% pure products. You can be guaranteed that our VPA Australia WPC is pure WPC with a small amount of flavouring and sweetener.
