Routine microbial testing is the regular examination of products and the VPA facility for the presence of microorganisms. VPA Australia conducts this testing to ensure the safety and quality of its protein supplements, protecting our customers from potential health risks.
How is microbial testing performed?
Environmental and product testing involve taking swabs, samples and air samples from various stages of the process and areas in the food processing facility. These samples are then cultured in a lab to identify and quantify the microorganisms present. The samples are analyzed only by a NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities)- accredited laboratory.
How often does VPA Australia conduct routine microbial testing on its products and facility?
VPA Australia conducts routine microbial testing at various stages of the production to maintain a high level of quality and safety. This is done once to twice a month, every month to ensure all products coming out of our facility are safe to consume.
What types of microorganisms are typically tested in VPA's routine microbial testing process?
VPA tests for a range of microorganisms, both in the environment and in the product. In the environment, we test specifically for Faecal coliforms and Escherichia coli in the water, plate count in the air and Salmonella on food-contact and non-food contact surfaces. In the products, we test for Salmonella and B. cereus.
What measures does VPA Australia take if microbial contaminants are detected in its products?
If microbial contaminants are found, VPA takes immediate corrective actions, which may include product disposal, production line sterilization, and investigation into the source of contamination to prevent recurrence. Additionally, we notify the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and Safe Food Production Queensland (SFQ) and work on containing the affected finished products. We will work on resolving the issues before commencing production.
