The TGA Introduces New Safety Rules for Vitamin B6 — Here’s What It Means for You

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has released important new regulations around supplements containing vitamin B6, designed to help protect Australians from potential nerve damage linked to long-term high-dose use.

As a leading Australian supplement manufacturer, VPA is here to break down the changes in a clear and trustworthy way, so you know exactly what’s happening and why.

Why the TGA Is Updating Vitamin B6 Controls

Vitamin B6 plays a helpful role in metabolism, hormone regulation and nervous system health — but like many nutrients, too much over a long period can cause harm. The TGA’s updated ruling follows extensive reviews and public consultation, with strong support for improved safety measures.

The key concern?
Prolonged high-dose intake of vitamin B6 may lead to peripheral nerve damage, showing up as tingling, burning or numbness in the hands or feet.

A Quick Look at the New Rules

The TGA has introduced clearer dosage categories so consumers can use vitamin B6 safely and with the right level of professional guidance.

✔ 50 mg or less per day — No change

Still available at supermarkets, pharmacies and online retailers without restrictions.

✔ Over 50 mg up to 200 mg — Pharmacist advice required

These products will remain OTC but only with a pharmacist’s guidance at the point of sale.

✔ Over 200 mg — Prescription only

High-dose therapeutic products will continue to require approval from a doctor.

These changes will officially begin 1 June 2027, allowing time for product updates and industry-wide compliance.

How Much Vitamin B6 Do Australians Actually Need?

Vitamin B6 deficiency israre in Australia. Most adults need:

  • 1.1–1.3 mg/day (minimum requirement)

  • 1.3–1.7 mg/day (recommended intake)

Higher-risk groups include older adults, those with alcohol dependence, individuals with obesity, and people with certain kidney, liver or autoimmune conditions.

VPA Products: Well Within Safe Vitamin B6 Levels

Your safety is paramount — and VPA products already sit comfortably within the TGA’s low-dose category.  Here are the vitamin B6 amounts per serve in key VPA products:

To put this into perspective:
You would need to consume around 26 servings per day of our Breakfast Shake or ZMA6 to exceed the new lowest threshold foradditional controls.

VPA products remain safe, appropriate for everyday use, and fully aligned with the TGA’s guidance.

What You Should Do as a Consumer

For your safety and peace of mind:

  • Read labels carefully to understand vitamin B6 content (also listed as pyridoxine, pyridoxamine or pyridoxal).

  • If you experience tingling, burning or numbness in your hands or feet, stop taking the product and seek medical advice promptly.

  • Report any side effects via the TGA’s Adverse Event Reporting System to help strengthen national supplement safety.
